How did you become interested in genealogy?

I remember hearing discussions about a couple of family genealogy books; however, as a teen I paid little attention. Then in 1977, the mini-series Roots completely enthralled me, and a seed was planted. I went looking for those family books and soon enrolled in my first genealogy workshop. While my lines already had much research done, my husband knew very little about his heritage. I chose his family as my workshop project and thoroughly enjoyed the puzzle.

What is your most exciting or interesting genealogical discovery?

I discovered that my husband’s great-grandmother died within a few months of arriving in Halifax from Scotland in 1889, leaving behind two toddlers. My husband did not know this. His great-grandfather remarried and his second wife was the great-grandmother his family knew. My mother’s maiden name is Hunter. I have found several secondary sources citing a shipwreck or trouble off Sable Island in the late 1700’s when her immigrant Hunter ancestor was travelling from Scotland/Ireland to Philadelphia. While some passengers eventually continued on their way from Halifax my 4th great-grandfather, David Hunter, remained in Nova Scotia. My goal is to find out more about that ship and its troubles.

What brought you to GANS?

I was a member of GANS decades ago; however, life got in the way and my membership lapsed. In 2019, upon my husband’s death, I found myself with time on my hands. By this time, I conveniently lived a few blocks up the street from the GANS office/library. Rejoining and getting involved has provided me with a fulfilling way to spend my time.

What is your position/responsibility at GANS?

I am currently VP & Secretary. I also head up the Query Research Services team.

What is your professional background?

I was a commercial mortgage administrator/supervisor for about 20 years of my 25-year career at Halifax’s Maritime Life - a great company to work for. We were encouraged to “think it through before asking” which certainly helps today doing genealogical queries.

What are your interests outside of genealogy?

I enjoy spending time with my four grandchildren – much of it at soccer fields and dance recitals. I love to travel and experience the scenery, the food, the museums and the people of other countries as well as Canada and, of course, our own beautiful Nova Scotia. It’s said: “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer”. Photography is another hobby of mine and I have taken thousands of pictures from my travels (and my grandchildren, of course). I also read daily.
